Implementation of Fast GC and Hydrogen Carrier Gases in Forensic Science Applications

This project is geared towards conversion of forensic science gas chromatography separations from the short-supply, expensive helium mobile phases (carrier gas) to the more abundant, cheaper hydrogen mobile phase.  The work funded by the Midwest Forensics Resource Center has led to the implementation of the Fast GC (oven modification) as well as the adoption of hydrogen mobile phase in one of the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory-Milwaukee GC units.  This work is continuing as "development" in the 2012-13 year with an eye towards wider scale adoption of the technologies.

Ignitable Liquid Identification

This project explores improvements in the identification of ignitable liquids in a variety of common matrices.  Our work in this area currently involves two projects.  The first examines the effect of laundry cycles on the identificaiton of ignitable liquids in clothing.  This is a collaborative project with the Florida Bureau of Forensic Fire and Explosives Analysis.  The second project in this area is in the "feasibility stage".  We are currently assessing the interest among the community in ascertaining Type I and Type II error rates in ignitable liquid identification through a double blind study.  While concurrent enrollment in CHEM 3510 Organic Chemistry is recommended, Engineering students with CHEM 1450 Chemistry for Engineers and students with CHEM 1240 are welcome to participate in this project as well at the CHEM 2000 level.

Development of Novel Polymers for Fingerprint Lifting and Preservation

The aim of this effort is the development of one or more forensic science applications for a novel polymer system.  The first arena is lifting imaged (dusted) latent prints from highly irregular surfaces such as bottles, cans, dashboards, gallon milk containers, and ejection molded plastics.  The second area of interest is the use of the material to preserved imaged latents on documents.

Other Areas of Interest:

Rapid Separation of Methamphetamin Precursors

Mercury Detection

Metal-Protein Interactions in Alzheimer's Disease

Trace Metals in Consumer Products

Philatelic Microscopy
